Perhaps you’ve been following the controversy over The Penguin book of Canadian short stories (a couple of literary journal editors have questioned editor Jane Urquhart’s choice of what stories to include). The book is available at Laidlaw Library; to read about the controversy see Paul Wells’s blog.
As I listened to one of the book’s critics being interviewed on the CBC, and mentioning over and over again one particular author who’d been excluded from the anthology, I found myself sympathizing with Urquhart — it can’t be easy putting together an anthology. But then, I might be biased, as I’m a fan of Urquhart’s novels (I especially liked The Whirlpool and Away). In any case, it’s nice to see Canadian literary issues making the news!
