Exhilaratingly bleak

The novel that won the Man Booker prize this week, Anne Enright’s The Gathering, has been described as “exhilaratingly bleak.” If you find that desciption intriguing, as I did, you might enjoy this brief BBC interview with Anne Enright, shortly after she won; she seems like a lovely person.

On the other hand, if “exhilaratingly bleak” makes you want to run screaming in the other direction, you might prefer to try one of the other books that was shortlisted for the prize: Animal’s People, The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Mister Pip, Darkmans, or On Chesil Beach — though some of them sound rather bleak as well!
